Check back for all the latest launch day information, weather updates and road closures.
Please note the event will not be happen again on the reserve date (June 4th). This back up date was only if the event could not happen due to rain and was cancelled in advance. Whilst the balloon didn’t quite make it up, the event did go ahead and planning, organisation and insurance requirements mean it won’t be happening again in the near future. The pilot made the decision to abort and Sir David Hempleman-Adams and everyone attending and involved were disappointed of course. A great day out with many many enjoying the fun and visiting our very special Athelstan Museum. All proceeds will go towards the Moravian Church restoration.
Road Closures and Parking
On the day of the balloon launch (May 21st or June 4th) Cross Hayes Lane and St Dennis Road will be completely closed to traffic from 2.30-8.00pm. If possible we will close them a little later and open them a little earlier, but the closures are needed to ensure the safety of the volunteers running, and the visitors attending, the event. These closures mean that the routes from north to south through the town centre will not be available. Traffic will be able to travel down Oxford Street from the Market Cross, but will be directed left down Holloway and up to the A429 bypass. Access will then possible into the town, or on to Chippenham, from the Priory Roundabout. There will access for residents, and to the additional parking, from the A429 Whychurch Roundabout, but no through route along Cross Hayes Lane.
The Cross Hayes car park will be closed from 8am – 8pm to enable safe assembly of tents, stalls and sideshows in preparation for the events in the afternoon, and the safe inflation and launch of the balloon.
Alternative parking will be available in Station Yard long stay. Please note that the barriers at the car park at Waitrose will come down at 4.30 and you would be unable to exit after this time. Additional parking is very kindly being made available at Whychurch Farm, just off the Whychurch Roundabout on the A429. This will be clearly signed.
